We get giddy when we see beautifully designed homes—bonus points for clean lines and a healthy dose of natural light—and this new summer home project by lead designer Angela Hamwey of award-winning design firm Mackenzie & Co. checks all the right boxes.
Angela has been based in Boston and Cape Cod, but we’re thrilled that she’s recently expanded her business to include Naples, too. (Can’t you just picture these beautiful colors in an Old Naples beach house?!)
Here, Angela shares the inspiration and planning behind this 3,000-square-foot contemporary coastal farmhouse in picturesque Martha’s Vineyard. “The client’s vision for their summer escape was a design that worked with lots of family and friends; a nice and relaxed atmosphere for the adults and something kid-friendly, too,” Angela says. “The aim was to create a home that is colorful and cheerful, yet versatile and easygoing.”
“The kitchen (pictured above) is a central hub of a family house—a gathering space not just about cooking, but also about connecting. With this being said, the aim here was to create a welcoming, light and bright aesthetic.
“The color palette is a focal element in the design of this kitchen. The vintage rug serves as a canvas for the space, with its muted, natural hues of pink, green and blue intertwining and pulling all of the colors in the kitchen. The rug is also special for its supply of built-in texture; it’s a piece that truly ties the room together.
“With all the activities that take place in the kitchen, good lighting is essential, but it should never be boring. Inspired by vintage factory lighting, the pale blue hanging pendants from Barnlight USA are key players in making the vision for this kitchen come to life and are the farthest thing from ordinary.”
“The mantra for the dining room was ‘the more the merrier!’ It was important to the client to incorporate a very lengthy table to accommodate family and friends alike, so this long, contemporary dining room table was everything and more! Perfect for family clambakes and leisurely suppers.”

Light fixture: Visual Comfort
“Because the table is set in its own alcove area, multiple pieces of art might have crowded the space. The great big lobster statement piece was all that was needed, and it contrasts so nicely with the cobalt blue chairs.”
“For the entryway, the vision was airy and open, with lots of natural light pouring in through the front windows. Good vibes are felt upon arrival to the home, thanks to the sunflower yellow stripe featured in this custom round Merida rug!
“For a touch of understated elegance and a little Parisian presence, the asymmetrical dough bowl was spot on.”

THE LIVING ROOM
“The design of the living room stands true to its name: lived in and laidback, but still uber chic. Books like Surf Shack and Indigo were placed atop the coffee table for a cute aesthetic and for good reads during the family’s downtime.
“All of the upholstered pieces throughout the house are from Rowe and are the epitome of casual and cozy. Once you sit down on these plush sofas, you’re instantly relaxed!
“Combining a contemporary look with a vintage feel, many of the custom throw pillows scattered about the house are by Sugar Feather. Pops of color here, different patterns and textures there—each pillow is unique and beautiful in its own way.”
“The mudroom needed a humble, coastal feel, as this space would likely be where the family will come and go to and from the beach. The blue fish wallpaper by watercolor artist Sara Fitz breathes life into this small area and brings it to the next level. With texture in mind, the slate floor is complimented by the natural fibers of the woven roman shades and vise versa.
“Since this home has an everlasting supply of natural light, these simple and minimal roman shades were used throughout the entire home. With windows were so big and bright, it would’ve been a crime to cover them up!”
THE KIDS’ ROOM
“The kids’ room is located upstairs in the home. The client described their two girls as adventurous and artsy, so the design embodies those traits with its fun custom bunk beds and life jacket focal wall. The teepee is such a cute piece that ties the space together with a feeling of amusement and lighthearted pleasure.”
“The bedrooms were designed with simplicity and ease in mind; we didn’t want the client to worry about fussing around with lots of elaborate detail.
“This gorgeous black bed by Beautiful Bed Co. was center stage to the space. The chunky woven rug—also a fave—brought so much texture to the design and instantly made it cozy and comfortable. After a long day swimming in the ocean, basking in the sunshine, or exploring nearby boutiques, this bedroom felt like just the perfect place to unwind.
“The all-white bedding was key to an effortless and timeless bedroom design. A pop of color was added by one big bolster to keep the look simple yet special all at once.

“The goal of the guest bedroom was to create a relaxing retreat where the clients’ guests can feel at peace in their home away from home. The seaside blue color of the bed really stole the show and provided such a serene energy to the space.
“With all the ‘new’ in this design—such as the handcrafted bed, white linens and soft rug—something old was necessary. The bamboo chair added just the right amount of character and charm. Every room deserves a beautiful vintage piece!”
“Outside on the patio, the teak furniture and comfortable slingback chairs without cushions provide an easy look. Just like the shingles of this coastal home, the teak will weather and age with time, all the while becoming more beautiful.
“The big umbrella adds subtle pattern to the patio. There’s nothing more summertime-esque than a good blue-and-white striped statement piece!”
