Some of the things we love most about Patina Collection are its soft linens, natural stones and textural neutrals, among other fabulous finds. We also can’t get enough of the diffused palette, which favors the natural Florida light and sun, it stays true to year-round—even during the holidays. Here, owner and curator Karen Abell and Atelier Director Kaylie Posner share their five best holiday decorating ideas and tips.
Plus, check out some gorgeous gift options in their Holiday Pop-Up Shop that are available in store right now!
Tip No. 1: Foundation
“Patina Collection is all about a neutral palette accented with subdued pops of slate blue and brass. This remains true even at Christmas. Traditional Christmas has vivid pops of reds and greens, and those are two colors you won’t find in our store. Our holiday decor consists of whites and creams, metallics and mercury glass with pops of muted blues and greens, breaking the mold of traditional Christmas decor.
“Christmas is a busy and hectic time of year. It’s easy to get overwhelmed entertaining, decorating your home and shopping for gifts. We lean towards minimalism when it comes to our holiday decor—keeping with the aesthetic of our store, grounding ourselves in the five elements of feng shui and creating a calm yet festive environment where you can still relax is essential.”
Tip No. 2: The Unexpected
“How fun does an upside-down Christmas tree sound? One of the most important things to remember this time of year is to keep it fun and enjoy it! What better way than to do the unexpected? We used one of our chandeliers as our tree topper. Find a fun tree base, like a vintage champagne crate, or pick a unique theme for your Christmas tree decorations and use non-traditional ‘ornaments.’ Our tree last year was garden-themed with small pots and mossy ribbon.”
Tip No. 3: Put a Sprig on It
“Another thing you can have a lot of fun with is gift wrapping. This is your chance to show not only how much time went into selecting the gift you’re giving, but also the care that went into wrapping it. Layers of ribbon, fun additions like fir sprigs incorporated into a bow and thick, beautiful wrapping paper give a wrapped gift that ‘wow’ factor you always hope someone experiences.”
Tip No. 4: Flocking and Faux
“Embrace faux trees! They can support even the heaviest ornaments, they’re shaped into just the perfect shape, and they come flocked! What better way to convey a white Christmas than with a beautiful flocked tree? If you miss the smell of a real Christmas tree, most sellers are happy to give you their trimmings; find unique places to add trimmings like urns, baskets or even a bread bowl for a fun table or bar centerpiece!”
Tip No. 5: Tablescape
“During the holidays, we spend a lot of time around our tables with friends and family. Add fun accents, like napkin rings adorned with ornaments, glittery Christmas tree placecard holders and anything else that lends a festive feel to your dinner table.
“Also, finding a go-to tabletop supplier is key. We curated pieces with ease from Marie Daage, French tabletop specialist, that embody the Patina Christmas. Marie offers so many designs, collections and colors to choose from, many of which don’t scream ‘Christmas tree!’
“You can make a bigger impact than you might think when your entire home coordinates. Create a year-round aesthetic, and simply elevate it with festive and fun additions for the holidays. And most importantly, have fun while you’re decorating. It is, after all, the happiest time of the year!”
